COMPREHENSIVE EYE EXAMS – evaluation of all ocular structures and its function. Most patients will have their pupils dilated with pharmaceutical agents (tropicamide, phenylepherine, cyclopentolate, etc.) for the complete evaluation of the retina along with a cycloplegic refraction. Patients are advised to bring a driver and sunglasses due to the increase sensitivity to light and the duration of the dilation (4-6 hrs). After the exam, the patient is given their spectacle prescription and recommended to go home and rest.

BASIC EYE EXAMS – a more succinct evaluation of primary ocular structures and of its function with a simple refraction. A 2 year spectacle prescriptions are given after the exam.

CONTACT LENS EXAMS– the calculation and fitment of a medical prosthetic termed “contacts” from the spectacle prescription. Contact exams focuses on ocular surface health since contacts may change the physiology of the eyes. One week follow up visit are usually required for first time patient as well as patient with large changes to their prescription. Contact exams are separated into the different types contacts needed for the patient: soft contact exam, rigid gas permeable contact exam, orthokeratology contact exam, and scleral contact exam. Only soft contact lens exam comes with a free trial contact lens, all others are usually require more than 1 visit for proper fitment.

MEDICAL EXAMS – medical exams are problem focus exams. They address the primary and secondary reasons for the visit. Problem focus exams like glaucoma exams, diabetic exams, and conjunctivitis exams address the physical illness of ocular conditions. Medications and therapies are usually prescribed for alleviation of ocular conditions but sometimes further medical investigations are needed through various referral to various specialist.

DIABETIC EXAMS – monitoring current medications with blood sugar levels and hemoglobin levels A1c along with a thorough examination of the retina for diabetic changes. Physical changes will be evaluated concurrently with functional changes to ensure that all variables are tightly controlled. Diabetes is the number one cause of vision loss under 65 age.

GLAUCOMA EXAMS– monitoring the changes to the optic nerve, intra ocular pressures, corneal thickness, peripheral vision changes, central vision changes, and medication regimes. Tight regulation of optic nerve changes are paramount to the success of treating glaucoma.

RETINAL PHOTOS – photos of the retina are taken with a Howa Retinal Camera and are included in all examinations. Digital photos ensure a visual history of the patients ocular health which may be need for future comparison of age related changes.

OPTOMETRIC TREATMENTS – California optometrist can prescribe oral medications like doxycycline and eye-drop medications like ciprofloxacin. We can perform procedures such as post surgical care, punctal plugs, lid expressions, lash removal, etc. We also are trained in therapeutic therapies such as vision therapy and low vision therapy. Optometrist are the front line responder to most ocular care.
